It's making me look at things in a new way. In Understanding Comics, Scott McCloud talks about how we iconify objects and ideas, and the process of conceptualization (learning) reminded me of On Intelligence by Jeff Hawkins (interview) and Ways of Seeing by John Berger (excerpt).

Additionally, McCloud has some great thoughts on how a reader or audience identifies with characters in a book or movie, so distilling the character down to essential elements of humanity in comics and cartoons is more successful in getting the reader or audience to identify with those characters.

Dalai Lama road trip

His Holiness the Dalai Lama is on a road trip and coming to Seattle in April. One of my favorite (and as usual, cancelled) television shows was American Gothic. This quirky, superbly written CBS series was created by Shaun Cassidy. Yes, the Shaun Cassidy of Hardy Boys and Teen Beat fame. CBS, being CBS, killed the show after less than a year on the air.

Aside from the high quality and uniqueness of the show was the fact that a teen-idol had created it. I mean, how surprised would you be in 10 years if you found that Britney Spears or [insert random pop star here] had created a critically acclaimed TV series? Maybe I'm being shallow, but that's something I just don't expect from a teen idol.

I got to wondering what was different about Cassidy that led him down this path. Turns out that, instead of going to college, he wrote to Columbia University and asked them for their reading list. Then he read all the books on that reading list.

So, with available information, and a healthy dose of motivation, you can learn anything you want.

Which brings me to my point: Whether you want to go to school or not, everyone should *want* to learn more about the world around them. And in the 21st century, lack or accessibility of information is not a valid reason for not doing this.

Got an interest? Google it. Don't trust the internet for accuracy? Limit your results to colleges or government web sites. Better yet, why not formulate a study plan using actual college course lists and syllabi? Many schools have free lectures online, so you still get a lot of that instructor vibe if you follow along. Some schools, like MIT, have a web presence dedicated to free courseware. Use your local library for supplemental reference texts, and Just Do It.

Last post(?)

You never know when it will be your last post. If this was my last post, there are some things I would want to say - especially to my kids.

Please, learn from others' mistakes. That includes me. That's why I'm writing this.

Despite all temptation, *never* think that you know it all. You might know a lot, and that's good, but there is always something to learn.

On the other hand, have confidence in your abilities. Speak up if you know the answer.

Learn something new every day. Be a different and better person than the one who started the day.

Never stop doing these things. In 10 years you'll look back at yourself and say "Wow!"

Share something every day. Not everyone will appreciate this, but some will. And some of those you will inspire.

Choose your audience. Not everyone will care what you have to say, but some will. If you can't make a change, talk to those who can.

Choose your battles. Save your strength and your reputation for the important things. Many things will piss you off, but they're not all battles worth fighting.

If you really *have to* say something that is risky or might get you in hot water, write it down. Then wait. Read it over the next day. Or the next week. See if you don't already feel better. Or maybe you still feel like you want to send it or say it. And that's fine. This is a good way of weeding out the little things.

Life may be lonely at times, but don't *ever* feel like you're in it alone. There are people who care about you who you may not even know (yet).

Don't take life too seriously. Don't sweat the small stuff. And yes, it *is* all small stuff.

When the going gets tough, ask yourself, "will any of this matter in 100 years?"

Read "Sunscreen," by Mary Schmich, and then listen to Baz Lurhmann's version (credited to Kurt Vonnegut). Take this advice.

Read Kurt Vonnegut. Now there's a guy with a sense of humour.

Take time to relax every day. Laugh.

Know that life is about disappointment. And every disappointment *is* an opportunity. You just won't know until afterward. Sometimes it may take years to see it.

Read Steve Jobs 2005 Stanford commencement speech. Yes, life is about coincidences and connecting the dots.

Look back and connect your dots. Find your strengths. Exploit them.

When you go through your day, take note of and appreciate the things you use automatically, without thinking. Water, electricity, gas. Think about what you would do if they weren't there. There are times they won't be.

Learn the power of silence (also known as "keeping your mouth closed - and your foot out of it").

Don't blog everything. The internet is forever. When you get ready to post something, ask yourself, "do I want my children and my grandchildren reading this?"

Say "thank you." If you really appreciate someone, tell them. De Botton presents the causes of and solutions to the anxiety inevitably caused by comparing ourselves with our peers. The whole concept is very interesting, and it rings true; check out the Wikipedia article for a precis. I highly recommend the book, and you can watch video excerpts from the television special on de Botton's site.

[Edit 6/22/07] This article in the Seattle Times is really kind of sad, but it made me think about the theory that the rich support our economy with their lavish spending on non-essential items. Pandora is a customizable internet jukebox/radio station; I'd heard about it on the Inside the Net podcast.

You build it based on your musical tastes; give it the seed of a song or a group, and it will roll your own radio station. As you hear new stuff (and you will hear new stuff), you tell it if you like the new selections or if you don't think they're appropriate for that station. The nice thing is, you can create multiple radio stations, and listen based on your mood. It's all browser based; no need to download a client. Very cool.

That's where I heard The Mountain Goats, and they fit perfectly in with my musical tastes.

My favorite lyrics, from their song Game Shows Touch Our Lives:

Dug up a fifth of Hood River gin
That stuff tastes like medicine
But I'll take it
It'll do...

People say friends don't destroy one another
What do they know about friends?

Folklife and new bands!

More new bands at Folklife! One benefit of the NHL lockout is the increased attendance at WHL games, especially in cities like Vancouver, with teams in both leagues.

Another was Phoenix Coyote Brett Hull's appearance on Saturday Night Live last night. When Weekend Update co-anchor Amy Poehler asked him how he felt about the recent move in Canada to legitimize same-sex marriage, he said, "That's what happens in Canada when there's no hockey. My reading list is packed with how-tos, biographies, histories, technical tomes, study guides, and religious reading. How boring, you say.

Okay. Although I habitually read non-fiction, I realize there is a realm that cannot be entered, or made interesting, for sure, by non-fiction. The realm of "what could be." New social or scientific paradigms are especially suited for fiction. To get to a different plane of thought, it's much easier to take the reader with you via fiction, as they sympathize with your character and come along for the ride.

A couple of the mind benders:

Stranger In a Strange Land
The Moon is a Harsh Mistress

Both by Heinlein, of course.

Can you hear me now? NO!

For some reason, my employer chose to change service from geek chic Nextel to Verizon. What a mistake. Verizon has poor coverage (frequently one or less bars). When I do have coverage, the signal quality is horrible and my calls are frequently dropped.

The actual phone is almost as bad as the carrier. My LG VX4400 is incredibly non-intuitive and most operations require three or more button pushes, where my Motorola flip-phone could do the same is one. Earpiece sound is incredibly weak and focused, so even a slight move of the phone causes you to lose the audio. Even the phonebook function is poorly designed. The Motorola allowed you to easily toggle the number without changing the menu or name you were viewing. The LG requires you to actually open the phonebook entry to dial a number other than the default. Incredible!

To top it off, we dumped the direct connect with Nextel and opted out of the Verizon direct connect. Can't say I'm surprised or horribly put out; I'm convinced it would be just as horrible as the rest of Verizon's service.

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://daveshermitage.blogspot.com/2004/02/can-you-hear-me-now-no.html' title='Can you hear me now? What I realized (yet again) is how quickly we forget our recent past. It's amazing how the U.S. can change their stance on an issue, depending on what's at stake. The U.S. was directly involved in causing the current situations in Iraq, Afghanistan, and to a certain extent, Palestine. Additionally, it's very interesting to be confronted with the actual reasons the U.S. has a stake in the region. Give it a read. I walk almost a mile from my bus to work every morning. And I have the most lucid experiences. It's like meditation or dreaming. I have the most wonderful thought & ideas. I think, "I've got to share these ideas; put the on my blog." And when I get to work and later home, do I remember anything? Nyet.

Maybe I'll start recording my stream of consciousness thinking... these good ideas are really going, going... Of course maybe it's like when you're drunk - you say things which you think are so insightful - later to realize how inane they sound. Not to forget that everything is in context - what is a very powerful experience at the time is only so because of the specific environment at the time.

Where my mini-recorder, anyway?

Tomorrow Now

I just finished skimming Bruce Sterling's Tomorrow Now: Envisioning the Next Fifty Years. For me this means reading the interesting parts. I was throroughly engrossed by Chapter 4: The Soldier. Bruce gives a snapshot of three contemporary terrorists/warlords; the precise description depends on your point of view. He profiles Chechnya's Shamil Basaev, Serbia's Zeljko Raznatovic (AKA Arkan), and Turkish Kurd Abdullah Catli. I found the key traits summary particularly intriguing.

ABC's for future Arkans, Basaevs, and Catlis:

1. Male 25-40, likes handguns and has visceral, hands-on experience with face-to-face violence.
2. Extensive prison history somehow enhances his public reputation.
3. Quite good-looking, enjoys making a show in posh casinos and hotels with a line in feminine arm candy.
4. Speaks several languages, has spent much time in other countries.
5. Fluent, fast on his feet, media-savvy, good on TV.
6. Has a personal posse of devoted tough guys who are known by their nicknames - or, better yet, by the fake IDs that they got from cops.
7. Gets richer and more influential as life gets harder for his neighbors.
8. Emits chauvinist rhetoric but kills many people of his own nationality. Killing rivals in gangland a particular speciality.
9. Lousy at straight jobs. Can't take orders. Essentially unemployable.
10. Prominent in politics, eminently electable, but has no political philosophy, no sensible platform for goverance, and no legislative or executive experience.

Definitely sounds like a blueprint for a terrorist to me. Particularly striking are Bruce's comments that "He can light bonfires inside the New World Order and perhaps devastate wide areas, but he cannot build anything. He can't even defend the patch of ground that he himself is standing on."

ASL

The instructor for my ASL course (American Sign Language) lectured on deaf culture and history last night. We had an interpreter for the first time. I realized how much I miss & take for granted being able to ask questions regularly - as in other classes with hearing teachers. This does make me ponder all my questions even more. The lecture was very good & I'm looking forward to the next one.

I asked him about the TTY (teletypewriter) and mentioned that I've used RTTY (radio teletype) at work.
